Mario Gabelli is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Gabelli Asset Management Company Investors (GAMCO Investors), an investment firm located in Rye, New York. Growing up, Gabelli was always fond of the markets, reading market reports at a young age. He actually purchased his first stock at the age of 13.
Following his graduation of Fordham Preparatory School, Gabelli received a scholarship to attend Fordham University. Mario graduated summa cum laude and then went on to earn his Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia Business School. By the mid 1980’s, Gabelli was managing over $350 million in assets and compounding returns at more than 35% a year.
From a philanthropic aspect, Gabelli has donated to many different educational institutions. In December of 2013, Gabelli donated $1.5 million to the University of Nevada – Reno to help pay for the construction of the E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center. Gabelli serves as a member of the Wiegand Foundation’s board of trustees. In July of 2013, Gabelli pledged $15 million to Columbia Graduate Business School. The money is going towards the construction of Columbia Business School’s new Manhattanville campus. In September of 2010, Gabelli donated $25 million to Fordham University. The gift was the largest ever in the history of the university and allowed the school to expand student scholarships and faculty chairs. The school went on to rename the undergraduate business college to the Gabelli School of Business.
