James Simons is a mathematician, hedge fund manager and philanthropist. Simons is the founder and CEO of Renaissance Technologies. James was also a professor at Stony Brook University. James was born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Simons attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. James would later attend the University of California, Berkeley where he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics under the supervision of Bertram Kostant.
In 1994, Simons and his second wife cofounded the Simons Foundation in 1994. The charitable organization supports causes related to education, health and scientific research. In 2004, Simons founded Math for America with a pledge of $25 million to get started. He would later double that pledge in 2006. Later in 2006, Simons made a $25 million donation the Stony Brook University which is the largest donation to a state university of New York.
