Dan Loeb is a hedge fund manager located in New York City. Loeb is the Founder and CEO of Third Point LLC. Loeb has had the entrepreneurial instinct at a very young age. In fact, he knew he wanted to start investing at the age of 5. His entrepreneurial roots go back to his great aunt who’s actually the creator of the Barbie doll.
Loeb was raised in Santa Monica, California and attended the University of California at Berkeley. After two years, Loeb transferred to Columbia University where he earned an economics degree. By the time Dan was ready to graduate he had already made $120,000 in the stock market. However, he soon lost it all on a poor investment that taught him a lesson that would last a lifetime.
Loeb held various different roles with Warburg Pincus, Island Records, Lafer Equity Investors, Jeffries LLC and Citigroup, where he served as the vice president. Loeb would make his biggest career move in 1995, starting Third Point Management. Loebs seed money, $3.3 million from family and friends has grown today to $14 billion today. Some of Loeb and Third Point’s biggest involvements have been with Yahoo!, Sony, Sotheby and Ligand Pharmaceuticals.
With a commitment to giving back, Loeb and Third Point setup The Daniel S Loeb Family Third Point Foundation. Some of the causes Loeb is most passionate about are LGBT freedom, justice reform and Alzheimer’s. The foundation has approximately $4.5 million in assets today.
